The Hermanus getaway had been planned for weeks.
It was meant to be a proper solo vacation a few quiet days away from everyday life, with nothing on the agenda except the ocean, good food and time to myself. I had arrived the previous evening, settled into my accommodation and gone to bed looking forward to a slow morning.
Just after sunrise, there was a knock at the door.
It was him.
The masseuse I had booked.
He had arrived early, carrying his massage bag and wearing an easy smile.
“Am I too early?”
“Not at all,” I replied, stepping aside to let him in.
The morning light was soft and golden through the windows. Outside, Hermanus was beginning to wake, but inside everything felt peaceful and private.
He set up the massage table while we chatted. There was an immediate ease between us, the kind that made conversation feel effortless.
Eventually, I lay down.
His hands began working across my shoulders, slowly releasing the tension that had built up during the journey. His touch was confident and professional, but there was something about the atmosphere that made me unusually aware of every movement.
I closed my eyes.
His fingers moved gently across my shoulders and down my back.
“Comfortable?”
“Very.”
A quiet smile touched his voice.
The massage continued.
Minutes passed, but neither of us seemed particularly interested in rushing. Occasionally our eyes met in the mirror, and each time there was a little more meaning behind the look.
When he eventually paused, I opened my eyes.
Neither of us spoke.
I sat up slowly and looked at him.
There was a different energy in the room now.
I stood and took my time, deliberately letting the silence linger. He watched me, but didn’t rush forward. That restraint somehow made the moment more intense.
I smiled.
He smiled back.
The distance between us seemed to shrink without either of us consciously deciding to move.
He stepped closer.
I could feel the warmth of him in front of me, and suddenly the beautiful morning outside seemed very far away.
Our eyes met.
Then came a slow, tentative kiss.
It was gentle at first, almost a question.
The answer was in the way we stayed close afterward.
Another kiss followed, less hesitant than the first.
The quiet room seemed to disappear around us as the chemistry that had been building throughout the morning finally became impossible to ignore.
We stayed together for a long while, talking softly between kisses, laughing occasionally and enjoying the strange intimacy of two people who had met only that morning but somehow felt completely at ease with each other.
Eventually, the rest of the world could wait.
The curtains remained open just enough for the sunlight to spill across the room, while beyond the window the Hermanus coastline stretched peacefully into the distance.
My carefully planned solo vacation had suddenly acquired an entirely unexpected chapter.
And somehow, I knew it was going to be one of the memories I carried home with me.
