Do Regular Play Partners Lead to Feelings?

One of the things we've heard over and over again from people in the lifestyle is this:

"Be careful of regulars. That's how feelings start."

It got us thinking.

Is that really true? Or is it one of those pieces of advice that gets passed around because it happened to someone once?

The more we talk to experienced couples, the more we realize there doesn't seem to be one right answer.

Some couples won't see the same people more than once or twice. Their thinking is simple: the less time you spend with the same people, the less chance there is of becoming emotionally attached.

Others do exactly the opposite.

They'll tell you their best experiences have almost always been with couples they've seen several times.

And honestly from our perspective, ... both viewpoints make sense.

When you meet a new couple, there's usually a little awkwardness. Everyone is still trying to work each other out to perhaps gather a comfortable spread to go ahead with ? Are they adventurous? Are they shy? What are their boundaries?

You spend half the evening reading the room.

Should things go well and you meet again, something changes.

The awkwardness disappears.

Everyone relaxes.

You already know some of each other's personalities, you've established a degree of trust, nobody feels like they have to impress anyone. Things just seem to flow more naturally.

Speaking for ourselves, we've discovered that while one-time experiences can certainly be enjoyable, we much prefer seeing the same couple a few times. For us, the sex actually becomes easier, far more enjoyable, once there's a little familiarity. Everyone appear more relaxed, communication flow with more ease and there's less uncertainty about what everyone enjoys or what their boundaries are. Instead of spending the evening figuring each other out, you can simply enjoy each other's company.

We've even made genuine friendships with a few couples over time, those experiences have been some of our best.

Then comes the question everyone seems to worry about.

Can that familiarity eventually turn into something more?

Our personal feeling, if you and your spouse have a genuinely strong relationship, built on trust, honesty, and communication, then getting to know another couple doesn't automatically mean someone is going to fall in love.

Friendship doesn't automatically become romance.

Yes, we're human, and naturally we'll enjoy spending time with people we click with. That's true in every part of life.

Though, enjoying someone's company and developing romantic feelings aren't necessarily the same thing.

That said, we're also realistic enough to understand that every relationship is different. What works perfectly for one couple may not work at all, for another.

Maybe that's why there isn't a universal rule.

Some couples thrive on meeting someone new, every single time.

Others build a small circle of trusted friends that they enjoy spending time with for years.

Neither approach is wrong, if both partners genuinely feel comfortable with it, that would be how they roll.

To us, the real question isn't whether regular play partners are good or bad.

It's whether your relationship remains the priority.

Are you still talking openly?

Are you checking in with each other after experiences?

Can either raise concerns without the other becoming defensive?

Those conversations probably matter far more than whether you've seen the same couple once or five times.

So we're curious.

If you've been in the lifestyle for a while, what's been your experience?

Do you deliberately avoid regulars because you've found it keeps things simpler?

Or had your best experiences actually come from seeing the same couples more than once?

If you've ever found emotions starting to creep in, how did you and your partner recognize it? How did you angle and manage such?

We're not looking for a right or wrong answer. We're simply interested in hearing how different couples navigate this part of the lifestyle, should you be comfortable to share.

As always, thanks to everyone who's willing to share their experiences. Reading the perspectives of people who've been doing this for years has been one of the best ways for us to consider and explore into perspectives of other.
