From across the room,
I knew
That you were meant for me,
But then I saw the adoring throng
Surrounding you.
I knew
That I could never compete,
Against the verve of youth,
Their bright eyed bloom, and flawless skin,
And bold and boisterous sex.
But as your eyes met mine
I knew
your lingering glance
looked past the obvious,
And I was young again.
I knew
The day might come
When you might flee
The droop, and shuffle, and stale urine smell,
To firmer arms and sweeter breath.
But for a while
I knew
Beneath the flaws
You saw, and loved
The ageless me
I knew
It would have been naive
To expect that you would stay the course,
But how I hoped
You might.
