Therme Erding, located just outside Munich in Germany, is one of the largest thermal spa and wellness complexes in Europe. While the thermal pools and wellness facilities are impressive in their own right, the heart of the experience lies within the extensive sauna world, where traditional German sauna culture is embraced in its purest form.
My wife and I visited during our holiday in Germany, eager to experience something completely different from the spa culture we knew back home. Almost immediately, we realised that this was not simply a place to relax; it was a place to step outside of your comfort zone.
The experience began in the communal changing areas. Around us, people calmly undressed, stored their belongings and prepared for the day ahead. There was no awkwardness, no embarrassment and no attempt to hide. Nudity was simply accepted as part of the environment. As first-time visitors, it felt unfamiliar at first, but that feeling quickly gave way to curiosity and eventually complete comfort.
I remember watching my wife embrace the experience far more naturally than either of us had expected. Within a surprisingly short time, she seemed completely at ease with the environment around her. In a culture where nudity is treated as something ordinary rather than something to be concealed, she quickly blended into the rhythm of the spa. Seeing her so relaxed and comfortable added another dimension to the day for me, highlighting just how different the experience was from anything we had encountered before.
Beyond the changing rooms, the sauna world opened up before us. Everywhere we looked were people moving naturally between saunas, plunge pools, relaxation areas and gardens without clothing. Men and women, young and old, athletic and ordinary, all shared the same spaces with remarkable ease. What initially caught our attention soon became completely normal.
The sheer scale of the sauna complex was extraordinary. Throughout the day we explored sauna after sauna, each offering a unique atmosphere. Some were dark and tranquil, illuminated only by soft lighting. Others featured dramatic architecture, colourful interiors or aromatic infusions. Temperatures varied significantly, allowing us to experience everything from gentle warmth to intense heat.
Moving together through the various facilities became part of the enjoyment. We would leave one sauna, cool down, relax for a while and then head off in search of the next experience. Whether walking through the gardens, sitting quietly in relaxation areas or moving between pools and saunas, the openness of the environment created a sense of freedom that was difficult to describe. The absence of self-consciousness among guests was striking, and my wife seemed to enjoy that freedom as much as I did.
One of the highlights was participating in several traditional Aufguss ceremonies. Entering a packed sauna filled with guests waiting for the ceremony to begin created a sense of anticipation unlike anything we had experienced before. As the sauna master poured water infused with essential oils onto the hot stones and expertly circulated the rising heat through the room, the temperature rapidly intensified. The combination of heat, scent and shared experience created a memorable atmosphere that captured the essence of German sauna culture.
Between sessions, we wandered through the complex, cooling off in pools, resting on loungers and exploring the beautifully designed relaxation areas. Everywhere, nudity remained a natural and accepted part of the experience. What struck us most was how quickly the human body ceased to be something unusual or noteworthy. The environment encouraged a sense of freedom and body acceptance that felt both refreshing and surprisingly liberating.
By the end of the day, what had seemed unfamiliar only hours earlier felt entirely natural. Therme Erding offered far more than relaxation; it provided a glimpse into a culture that approaches wellness, body confidence and social nudity with an openness that many visitors may never have experienced before.
For us, it became one of the most memorable experiences of our trip to Germany and a place we would gladly return to again.
