This poem was very touching to my heart, because it was a situation that really happened when I was working in a hotel in Brakpan Gauteng.
Just past ten
The bar door is open,
A gentleman enters and takes his seat
Orders a double brandy and coke.
Continuously, until he exits,
Hearing the key in the door behind him.
Day two, he continues,
Now it's three,
In the street a timid little jumps at the window,
Hoping to peer in.
Are you looking for some one
The timid little girl, with tears in her eyes,
And running down her dirty cheeks, and off her chin,
Looks into my eyes.
I lead her to the door.
Looking in
Her eyes catch the figure of the gentleman,
Running towards him
Crying out loud.
Daddy, daddy, please come home,
So we can eat again.
Turning round he sees his little girl,
Grabbing her by the hand,
He exits the bar, never to be seen,
Again.
