today I found this answer which I thought was rather amusing and very interesting...

I am an enthusiastic fan of group sex, and an avid attendee of orgies.
Among the sex-positive set I know (where the definition of "orgy" has been debated extensively), it is not necessary for the participants to be strangers in order for something to qualify as an orgy. (I for one am rather picky about my lovers, and unlikely to be involved in group sex with complete strangers.) Nor is food or alcohol necessarily involved--that may have been the case when the Greek root of the English word "orgy" was invented, but times change, and in any event English is not Greek. Most folks I know actually frown on having orgies while drunk.
So that takes care of some of the arguments other folks have offered. There might be abstract dictionary definitions that involve only sex parties of drunken strangers, but it's not the definition we see used by people who actually do the kinds of things that might reasonably qualify. Usage dictates meaning, after all.
Now, when three people have sex, we generally call it a threesome, not an orgy. And four people having sex is usually called a foursome rather than an orgy. That leaves five or more to make a proper orgy.
But there would seem to be other qualifications as well, chief among them being variety in sexual partnerings.
If three married couples happen to have sex in the same room, but only with their spouses and without cross-couple interaction, the folks I know wouldn't be inclined to call that an orgy. There has to be more than just same-room sex.
A few years ago, in fact, I was at a restaurant talking about this exact thing with one of my partners when our server, who was a very lovely woman, overheard us, thought about it for a while, and opined that she wouldn't describe same-room sex as an orgy, but would expect some mixing of the sexual pairings. I have no idea how experienced or inexperienced she was with group sex, but it's a data point that aligns with the opinions of the sex-positive set I've talked to in at least three cities, so there's that.
